CHODOSH BULLETIN AS OF 31 Jul 06
The email that I received from the US Department of Agriculture today
signals the official start of the full new Chodosh season. They reported
that by the end of last week, the week ending Jul 30, the harvest of the
spring wheat and barley crops have begun. By that time, 22% of the USA
grown spring wheat and 17% of the barley has already been harvested. (A
week earlier, there was still no reported harvest of these crops.) The oats
crop harvest began earlier, around Jul 16. (Actually, by Jul 9, 11% of the
oats was harvested, by Jul 16 the harvest of oats was 18%. I will use the
later date, Jul 16, as the effective harvest date for oats.) These dates
are about 1-2 weeks earlier than usual.
Based on the new guidelines, the table below gives the working dates that
will be used in this years Guide to Chodosh. The spring wheat dates will be
used for breads, rolls, challehs, pizza, bagels, yeast cakes and other
bread-like products that are not produced from Yoshon flour. It will also
be used for cereals, baking flour and other wheat products where it is not
possible to be certain that only winter wheat is used. The recommended
pasta and noodle cutoff dates are a week later. These dates are summarized
in the table below. In the table, there are two dates given. One is the
Chodosh PACKING date. Any package that was packed before this date will be
assumed to be Yoshon. The next column is the cutoff for the PURCHASE date.
Whatever you buy in the store before that date is probably still Yoshon. It
is suggested that you stock up on important items at this time, with oats
items being more urgent. However, it should be possible to easily find many
products in the stores even after the suggested cutoff purchase dates by
using dating codes. Those who have last years Guide to Chodosh, can use the
dating code systems given there for packaged foods to find foods packed
before the recommended Chodosh packing dates. We will try our best to get
the new Guide completed and mailed out by the end of August.
