CHODOSH BULLETIN AS OF 12 Jul 06
I received email from the US Department of Agriculture that signals the
official start of the new Chodosh season. Namely, the harvest of the
Chodosh oats has begun last week, the week ending Jul 9. By that time, 11%
of the new crop has been harvested. I expect to see first traces of this
Chodosh oats in products manufactured around Jul 23 or later. I urge all to
start storing up oats products of interest soon. However, whenever worm
contamination is possible, such items should be stored in worm-secure
locations such as refrigerators or freezers. This year the Guide to Chodosh
will no longer be able to advise later Chodosh cutoff dates for General
Mills cereals such as Cheerios, or for Quaker oats cereals. These should
also be stored up soon.
The US Dept of Agriculture has not yet reported the start of the harvest of
Chodosh wheat and barley. However, I expect those to start about 1-2 weeks
later than the oats.
