This is a copy of the preseason Chodosh Bulletin. It contains detailed
information about how to order the printed version of the Guide to Chodosh
for the upcoming season. Those who do not need the printed version will
have access to the email copies of the Guide and the updates free of charge
as in the past. The ordering information below is only for those who want
the printed version to be mailed to them by US mail. However it may be of
interest even to the email users that we are reorganizing the publication
schedule and frequency of the Guide, see below.

*MAJOR CHANGES COMING TO THE GUIDE TO CHODOSH*

· You can now order next year’s Guide by credit card. In fact this
will be the preferred method.

· We will issue one full Guide booklet, together with more frequent
update supplements, instead of the 3 issues as in the past.

*PAY FOR THE GUIDE BY CREDIT CARD*

We now encourage you to order the new Guide by using the new option of
payment by credit card rather than check. This has many advantages for you.

· Much more convenient than to mail in a check.

· No worry about your check being lost in mail.

· Faster response to your order (after the season has begun.)

· In addition, the use of credit cards should make our operation
more efficient and less prone to delays.

Therefore, we ask that you use credit cards when possible. There are three
ways to order by credit card:

· Call 845-356-9348 and record your answers to all of the questions
as prompted.

· Fill out the credit card order form printed below (or write all
the necessary information on an other piece of paper) and fax it to
845-746-4205.

· Ordering by secure email is not yet set up. We recommend that you
do not send credit card information by normal, unsecured email.

Whether you order the new Guide by credit card, or by sending a check, the
new cost is $16 for the season. For delivery within the USA. For elsewhere,
see the order form below.

*CHANGES IN THE NUMBER OF GUIDES*

* *

In the past, we issued 3 booklets per season, the full Guide in the
beginning and 2 updated booklets later (minus the first introductory
sections.) Between the publication of the updated booklets, we tried to
alert the public to changes by recording such changes on the Hot Line and
by sending bulletins by email. However, many people did not have access to
the email updates and did not listen to the corrections recorded on the Hot
Line. Even those who did receive all 3 issues of the Guide, did not receive
updates and corrections in a timely fashion. Therefore, we hope this year
to publish one master copy of the Guide in September. We will also publish
update supplements to this Guide on a more frequent basis. The reduction of
the number of booklets from 3 to 1 also allows us to lower the subscription
price from $20 to $16.

*AGRICULTURAL FACTS*

*WILL OATS BE MOSTLY YOSHON THIS YEAR?*

In order for a crop to be Yoshon it has to take root before the second day
of pesach. There are varying opinions about how much earlier the PLANTING
has to take place to make sure that it is already rooted by the second day
of pesach. One opinion is that 2 weeks are needed for roots to take hold,
according to an other opinion it takes only 3 days. According to the 2-week
opinion, all three crops, spring wheat, oats and barley that will be
harvested this year are mostly Chodosh since very little planting took
place 2 weeks before pesach. However, the reports issued by the U. S.
Department of Agriculture indicate that about 55% of the oats were already
planted in the US, 3 days before the second day of pesach. (However even at
this date only about 14% of the spring wheat and 12% of the barley were
planted, making most of those crops Chodosh after the harvest.) Therefore,
according to the 3-day halachic opinion, most of the oats in the US will be
Yoshon this year. (This unique situation arose this year, because the
unusually warm winter allowed plantings to start earlier than usual.) The
Guide to Chodosh will follow its established policy of not making halachic
decisions. We will continue to try to provide practical information. In
this case, after the start of the Chodosh season we will provide
information to help those who choose to be machmir and follow the 2-week
opinion. For personal halachic guidance concerning this oats question,
please contact your own Rov or other posek.

*WHEN WILL CHODOSH START?*

Based on experience of previous years, we expect that oats may start
becoming Chodosh as early as end of July, wheat and barley by mid August.
Foods using these ingredients that are hard to find in Yoshon form should
be stored up before the season starts.
