The third issue of the Guide to Chodosh is ready for your download

The third issue of the Guide to Chodosh will go the the printer BS"D on
Monday, Feb 27. It should start to reach the subscribers who have paid for
the printed copies, and the local distributors starting about Monday, Mar.
5. As usual, you can already start to download the full PDF version of the
Guide by sending an email to chodosh at moruda.com. The second source for the
Guide should be ready shortly. I will send out a second notice when that
second source is ready. Meanwhile, below is the list of the all the new
items in this issue of the Guide.

*Section 4.1 Cakes, Cookies and Crackers*

* *ד* Baker’s Harvest Crackers*, Graham Crackers and Saltines, Chodosh
code: Feb 15 12 (6 months after packing) Any item with a code using 3
numbers such as 227 was made more than 1 year ago and is Yoshon..

 א* Dvash *Bread Sticks are Yoshon under the hashgocho of Tartikover Beis
Din - Rabbi Shmuel Teitelbaum

 ד* Fiber Gourmet* Crackers - Chodosh code: Aug 15 12. (1 year after
packing)

*ב Kemach *Snackers and crackers no longer contain any malt. (The cinnamon
graham crackers also do not contain malt, but are using old packaging that
lista malt in the ingredients.) Since they use winter wheat, they are all
fully Yoshon. Flat bread Chodosh code 13 MAR 13. Under the hashgocho of
Rabbi M. Weissmandl.

* *ד* Mrs. Pure’s* ginger snaps have a chodosh code of Aug 15 12 (1 year
after packing).


*Section 4.2 Pretzels*

* *ד* Anderson’s* Pretzels: Chodosh code: 15JAN12 (5 months after packing)

 א* Haddar* Honey Wheat Pretzels are Yoshon both in the large and small
sizes, even without the Yoshon label. Under the hashgocho of the CRC.

* *א* Liebers* *pretzels* even those that contain oat bran and barley are
Yoshon. These ingredients were stored from before the time that the Chodosh
season began. Liebers Honey Wheat pretzels are Yoshon. Liebers Pretzels
Snacks whole wheat rings are Yoshon Under the hashgocho of Rabbi M.
Weissmandl.

* *ד* New York Pretzels* have a Chodosh code of code: 2271 (227-day of year
1-year) or August 14, 2012 (365 days  after packing).



*Section 5.1 Regular Noodles, Pasta, Mandlen and Croutons*

* *ד* Barilla* Fediccini code is Apr 22 14 (32 months after packing).

ד* Fiber Gourmet* Pasta has a Chodosh code of Aug 22 13, 2 years after
packing.

* *ד* Goodman* Pasta. Egg noodles Chodosh code: Aug 22 13 (2 years after
packing), All other pasta has a code of Aug 22 14 (3 years after packing).

*ב ** Kemach *egg noodles have a Chodosh code of Jan 30 12 (1 year after
packing.) Those with a Yoshon label are always Yoshon. Under the hashgocho
of Rabbi Nussen Horowitz.

 ד* Ronzoni Catelli and Lancia* pastas from Canada Chodosh codes: Regular
white pasta Dec 7 14, Smart, Whole Wheat, Egg noodles, and vegetable pasta
Dec 7 13; Multigrain Oct 26 12. Ronzoni pasta *made in Italy* has a code of
Aug 22 12 (12 months after packing) *Catelli* Whole Wheat Macaroni: chodosh
code: SEP0114 (3 years after packing).

* *ב* Streits* Fine Egg Noodles in 8 ounce packages. Some of these are now
Chodosh. The packages which are Chodosh have a sticker attached that states
“Not Yoshon”. All 8 ounce packages without such a sticker, as well as all
other Streits noodles are still Yoshon. (Some Streits Chow Mein noodles
also may have such a sticker.)

א* Taaman* Pasta is Yoshon under the Hashgocho of the Badatz of
Yerushalayim

 *Section 6.5 Cake and Other Mixes*

 ד* Fiber Gourmet* Cake Mixes - Chodosh code: Aug 15 13 (2 years after
packing).

* **ב* *Willmark *Breader Mix, Batter Mix and Donut Mixes made by VIP Foods
are Yoshon under the Hashgocho of the OU.

*Section 7.1 Barley*

* *א* Martisco* Barley - out of Business - Old supplies are Yoshon, but may
be wormy.

*Section 7.2 Bread and Corn Flake Crumbs and Matzo Meal*

* *ד* Jason* Bread Crumbs have a Chodosh code of 2273 (227-day of year,
3-year+2) or August 15, 2013 (2 years after packing).

*Section 8.1 Cereals*

* *ד* Bob’s Red Mill* Oat FLOUR has a Chodosh code of Feb 15 13 (18 months
after packing).

*ח Eden* farina and Eden oats may be Chodosh at this time, under the
hashgocho of the Nirbarter Rav, Rabbi Teitelbaum.

*ד Essential Oats* cereals, the Chodosh code is Jan 26 ’13 (18 months after
packing.)

* *ד* General Mills* cereals. The O-U has determined that wheat starch
where listed in the ingredients of  Cheerios cereals does not pose any
Chodosh problems. Therefore, all Cheerios cereals that contains oats or
oats plus wheat starch (but no other wheat ingredients, and no malt) have a
Chodosh date of March 7 '13.  This new finding only applies to wheat
starch, not other wheat ingredients. It also only applies to wheat starch
in the different Cheerios cereals, not the wheat starch in other General
Mills cereals. Those wheat ingredients are still being investigated.
Pending further information, we continue to assume that these other wheat
ingredients, including wheat starch in non-Cheerios cereals, may be Chodosh
starting with a package date of Aug 22 '12.  In addition malt, when used,
could be Chodosh after a package date  of Dec 22, '12.. The recently
revised package date for oats in Cheerios cereals remains March 7 '13. Note
that Multigrain Cheerios, Fiber 1 and other wheat containing cereals may be
Chodosh as of a package date of Aug 22 '12.

*ב Kemach cereals *The following oats-containing cereals have a Chodosh
code of Oct 1 12, even though they contain wheat starch or whet germ: Fruit
Whirls, Honey Crunch, Corn Crisp, Bunch ‘o Krunch, Toasted Oats and Honey
Nut Toasted Oats . Sugar Puffed Wheat has a Chodosh code of Aug 22 12. The
Chodosh malt packing date will start at March 1, ‘12. Therefore, for Kemach
cereals where the only Chodosh problem is malt, such as Corn Flakes, Crisp
Rice, Wheat Flakes, Bran Flakes, Cocoa Munchees, Sugar Flakes, the Chodosh
code is March 1, ‘13 (1 year after packing.) Under the hashgocho of Rabbi
Nussen N. Horowitz.



ד *Quaker* Instant cereals, flavored and unflavored. Look at the top left
corner of the front of the package. If the word “Classic” is printed there,
then the code is 540 days. Otherwise it may be 360 days.  The exception is
High Fiber Instant Oats for which the code is 270 days. In addition, the
Quaker table in the second issue of the Guide had an error. The oats date
for 360 days should be Nov 8 12 for USA produced cereals and Sept 21 12 for
those made in Canada.  Oat Bran has a shelf life of 540 days, not 270.

ד* Sturm-Village Farms *cereals. Instant oats cereals in aluminum foil
packets have a code that is 18 months after packing. The others are still 2
years after packing.

* *ס* Wheatena* cereal is listed in the Guide as being Yoshon, since it is
made with winter wheat. However, it contains what germ and wheat bran that
may be Chodosh. Code not known yet.

*Section 8.3 Bulgur, cracked wheat, kamut and cous cous*

ב *Best Kamut* white and whole wheat flour with a Yoshon label is Yoshon
under the hashgocho of Rabbi Gruber.


*9.1 Frozen and other packaged goods*

* *ד* Ben and Jerry's* Ice Cream: Cookies and Cream, Vanilla Crunch,
Chocolate Crunch and any other flavor with wheat have a Chodosh code of Feb
15 13 (18 months after packing).

* *ד* Gefen* Pie Crusts have a Chodosh code of AUG1514 (3 years after
packing). * Gefen* Egg Roll Wraps have a Chodosh code ##11H (##-first two
numbers not important, 11=year,H=month in alph order, other characters not
important).

* *ד* Keebler’s* Pie Crusts have a Chodosh code of Aug 15 12 (1 year after
packing).


* *ד* Lightlife* Smart Ground Original and Smart Ground Mexican Style:
Chodosh code: ###1227## (first 4 numbers- not important 1-year 227-day of
year, last 2 numbers - not important).


* *ד* Manischewitz* pie shells have a Chodosh code of 2272 (227-day of year
2-year+1) or Aug 15 12 (1 year after packing).


* *ד* Morning Star Farms* Chick Patties Original and Griller’s Prime Veggie
Burgers, Chodosh code: FEB15 13 (18 months after packing).


* *ח* Smackin Good* Frozen Pancakes ( not the mix) under the hasgocho of
Rabbi Weissmandl are CHODOSH

* *ד* Tofurky* Italian Sausage and Peppered Deli Slices have a Chodosh code
of 11227 (11-year 227-day of year) or 12/13/11 (120 days after packing).


* *א* Ungar* Cheese Blintzes are Yoshon under the Hashgocho of Rabbi
Mordechai Unger


*Section 9.3 Soups and soup mixes*


* *ד* Kedem* soup mixes the Chodosh code is 12271 (1=year, 227=day of year,
1=not important.)

* **ב** Kemach* vegetable and minestrone soups Chodosh code is 0164
(016=day of year, 4=year +2)


*Section 9.5.1 Beer*


* *ד* Coors* Beer, the Chodosh code should be 4 15 12.



*Section 9.6 Baby Foods*


* *ד* Gerber* baby foods in boxes, the code is 1 year after packing. For
oats the Chodosh date would be Jul 26 ‘12, for wheat and barley the code is
Aug 15 ‘12.


*Section 9.7 Candies*


* *ד* Jolly Rancher* uses winter wheat only and is Yoshon



*Section 10.4 Vitamins*


* *א* Freeda* vitamins do not use any of the 5 types of grain that could be
Chodosh. It contains only kitnios. Under the hashgocho of the O-U and the
Beis Din of New Square.


*Section 12.1.2 Wholesale Bakeries*


* *א* Korn, New York Kosher, Sterns, New York Kosher and Laromme* and other
brands made by the *15th Ave Food Corp* were listed as a “beis” category.
They should have an “aleph” rating.



*Section 12.3 Upstate New York and Catskills*

*א Crepes & Bagels*, Yoshon under the hashgocho of the CRC



*Section 12.4 New Jersey*

*א Gelbstein’s Bakery *in Lakewood, all is Yoshon, including items

store.



 ח* D&G Bakery* is no longer Yoshon.

* *א* Rockland Kosher*: Everything produced in the store is Yoshon under
the hashgocho of Rabbi Meshulam Polatsek.


*Section 13.1 Baltimore  *


* *ב* Cocoaccinos* 2831 Smith Avenue, Baltimore MD, 21209. Only one type of
sandwich and the pizza dough is available as Yoshon upon request. Yoshon
under the Hashgocho of Rabbi Zvi Weiss.
