week. It includes information about how to subscribe to the printed
issues of the Guide for the forthcoming season. As usual, the email
versions will be available for download free of charge. I will send out
a notice when the first issue is ready, around Sept 1.

In addition, we have published the revised issue of the Mashgiach's
Guide to Chodosh and Yoshon. Printed copies of this booklet are
available to be mailed free of charge to all Rabbonim, mashgichim and
others active in kashrus and hashgocho related fields. There is a charge
of $1 for all others. To have the free copies sent out, please forward
to me full name and address information for the recipients by email or
recording on the Hot Line (845-356-5743). The $1 charge for the others

TIME TO RENEW SUBSCRIPTIONS TO THE GUIDE TO CHODOSH

    NOTE COST REDUCTION

The Guide project does not accept any donations. Even though this is a
volunteer project, there are expenses that need to be covered by the
sales of the Guides. Last year we charged $18 for the three issues that
are printed per season. However, we estimate that this year we can get
by charging somewhat less. Therefore we are decreasing the cost of the
subscription from $18 *_to $17_* for the three issues. For those who buy
individual copies sold by local distributors, the first issue will cost
$7 and the remaining two will be $5 per issue. The $17 covers
subscriptions to be mailed within the USA. For Canadian addresses, the
cost of the 3 issues is $20. For Israel, Europe and other overseas
locations the cost is $24. To subscribe, please send your checks made
out to “Project Chodosh” to the Guide address given above.

_Disclaimer_: With the help of H-shem, we have been able to deliver all
3 issues to the paid subscribers each year thusfar. However, if due to
some unforeseen emergency, we should be unable to deliver some of the
paid issues, we ask that you be /mochel/ on the undelivered issues. (Of
course, if any individual did not receive his copy of the Guide, he
should call the Hot Line to advise us of his full name and address. The
Hot Line should only be called for this , however, if the Guide already
has been received by others and 2-3 weeks have gone by since you sent us
you subscription.) In addition, if anyone sends us $18 by mistake,
instead of the new rate of $17, we will not spend the time to return the
extra $1.

*_Note the address for subscriptions. _*To have the three issues of the
Guide mailed to your home use the form at the end of this letter to send
your full name, address including apartment number (if any) and zip
code, and phone number, together with a check made out to Project
Chodosh. The amount of money is specified above. Please mail these to:

  AGRICULTURAL UPDATE

The second day of pesach this year was on Apr. 4. As of the week ending
Apr 1, the U. S. Department of Agriculture reported that in the US, only
3% of the new spring wheat crop was planted. Similarly, by that date
only 7% of the barley and 29% of the oats were in the ground. The amount
of Yoshon left in storage from last year will be reported in July.
However, based on the amounts of held-over old (Yoshon) crop that were
normal in recent years and on the small fraction of the new crop planted
before pesach of this year, we estimate that this year, as for almost
all the years over the past 34 years, the spring wheat, oats and barley
grown in the US will be mostly Chodosh after the harvest (see next item,
below.)

  ESTIMATED CHODOSH STARTING DATES

The following are our early estimates of up to which date will it be
recommended that you can purchase foods without concern for Chodosh.
These are *preliminary estimates* only. Corrections and updates to these
will be posted when available, on the News section of the Chodosh Hot
Line and by email to those who subscribe to the email list (see below.)
The corrected dates will also be published in the first edition of the
Guide. The range of dates we give are the earliest and latest expected
safe purchase dates. Last year the harvest of Chodosh crops was earlier
than normal. Early indications are that this will also be the case this
year. Therefore, n*_ote that these recommended dates are earlier than
the cutoff dates used most of the years in the past._*

· Items using oats should be safe to purchase without looking at codes
up to sometime between Jul 26-Aug 10.

· Foods using wheat, other than noodles and pasta, safe to purchase up
to around Aug 14-Aug 28.

· Noodles and pasta up to Aug 21-Sept 4.

· Barley products, other than items from barley malt, safe to purchase
up to Aug 14-Aug 28.

· Barley malt products, including beer should be safe to purchase up to
Dec. 15.
