The following as of 13 Sept 05

GENERAL GUIDELINES ABOUT CHODOSH

The following are general guidelines to provide information until the
publication of the Guide to Chodosh. (See information below about the
reason for the delay of publication of the Guide to Chodosh.)

    * As of August 22 freshly baked items should only be purchased from
Yoshon bakeries. Baked products from other bakeries may be Chodosh after
that date.
    * Packaged foods containing spring wheat or oats may be Chodosh already
at this time.
    * For packaged foods from wheat or oats try to find items with a Yoshon
label on them.
    * All items produced in Israel under a reliable hashgocho are Yoshon.
    * All items produced anywhere in the world under the hashgocho of the
Badatz of Yerushalaim are always Yoshon.
    * Items produced in England under the hashgocho of the Kedassia of
London, of the London Federation synagogues, of the Beth Din of Manchester,
or Rabbi Westheim are always Yoshon.

BARLEY

So far as we know all barley will be Yoshon at least until mid
October. More specifically Gefen and Unger barley will be Yoshon, with
hashgocho, the entire season. Arrowhead Mills and Quaker Oats Company
barleys will also be Yoshon the entire season, both without hashgocho for
Yoshon. The following brands of barley will be Yoshon at least up to the
packing date of November 1: Benco, Jack Rabbit, Pathmark, Peak, Tender
Cook, Trinidad, White Rose. Goya barley is Yoshon up to a packing date of
October 11.

OATS

See points 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the general guidelines above.

Quaker Company oats are Chodosh after packing date of September 26, or
probable purchase date of October 11. The oats in General Mills cereals
are probably Yoshon up to a packing date of October 1, purchase date of
October 21. Other cereals that contain oats may be Chodosh after purchase
date of September 11.

NOODLES AND PASTA PRODUCTS

See points 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the general guidelines above. All USA-made
noodles and pastas purchased before Sept 15 are probably Yoshon. After this
date look for items with a Yoshon label. For products without a Yoshon
label, Adirim pasta and Landau whole wheat pasta will be Yoshon the entire
season. For other noodles and pasta codes have to be checked. These codes
will be available after the Guide is published.

BAKING FLOUR FOR HOME USE

The following flours for home baking are Yoshon:

White baking flour from Kemach, Haddar, Mishpacha, Ceresota, Heckers, Pathmark.

Bread flour by Dependable, Kemach, Mishpacha, Haddar (with Yoshon label),
F&Y in brown bags.

WHEN TO EXPECT THE GUIDE TO CHODOSH

We recognize that, especially due to the early start of the Chodosh season,
it would be desirable to publish the Guide to Chodosh earlier than
usual. However we have not been able to get pertinent and reliable
information earlier than in other years. This is due to the fact that many
people were away on vacation. It is also due to the fact that many
manufacturers were caught by surprise by the early harvest dates. As a
result, due to circumstances beyond our control, we do not expect to be
able to get the Guide completed before approximately the third week of
September. We urge everyone to keep up-to-date on new developments either
through the telephone Hot Line (845-356-5743), or the e-mail bulletins, or
via the BBS system that allows you to access our computer without going on
to the Internet. We apologize for any inconvenience that this publication
delay causes.

The Guide was sent to the printer on 13 Sept 04. It should be back from the
printed approximately on Monday, Sept 19.

Yoseph Herman, The Guide to Chodosh
