This is just a reminder about malt, as explained in the Guide to Chodosh.
The Guide stated that in cases where malt is used for coloring or flavoring
such as cereals (corn flakes etc), cookies or pretzels, if the dating code
is known, then the malt is probably Chodosh starting the packing date of
Jan 15. If the dating code is not know, it is probably safe to assume that
the malt is Yoshon up to a PURCHASE date of March 15. That date has now
passed. Therefore we recommend that for malt where the packing date is not
known, you should assume that the malt is now Chodosh. This is not a hard
date, only our best guess.
We have written a newly revised and expanded booklet called "A Survey of
the US Grocery Scene With Relevance to Purchase of Chometz After Pesach".
The Guide to Chodosh was written to be a practical guide to tell the Yoshon
consumer what is safe to buy as Yoshon. By contrast, the chometz report NOT
a practical guide to the consumer. Its intent was to provide rabbonim and
poskim with technical information based upon which they may be able to
advise consumers about where it is best to shop for chometz after pesach.
Unfortunately, the only firm conclusion you will be able to get from this
document immediately after reading it is that the chometz scene after
pesach is much more complicated than most people realize. The report gives
details about food wholesalers and supermarkets. It also gives the results
of last year's survey of the age of chometz products on supermarket
shelves. You will have to consult your own Rov or posek about how to
interpret this information.
