CHODOSH UPDATES AS OF 27 AUG 00

The big surprise this year is that due to a reduced oats harvest in the
USA, many major cereal producers have switched to using Canadian Oats as a
result, the oats Chodosh dates for many companies start October or later.

The following oats dates are known already:
Ralston, National, Shoprite, Ralston, HO-Jan 1
ConAgra, Grand Union, Pathmark-Oct 15
General Mills (Cheerios, etc.) Sept 18
Quaker Sept 1
Probable Average Chodosh date for other companies Oct. 9

For freshly baked bakery products in the Midwest such as Chicago, Detroit
and Cleveland. Some mills supplying this area already started producing
Chodosh on Aug 14. Some will be as late as Sept 7. Average probable
Chodosh date for the Midwest is Aug 25 (which has passed already.)

For the Northeast USA the earliest start of Chodosh in bakery flours is Aug
28 for flour milled by the Bay State Milling Company of Clifton NJ. The
latest estimate for the mills in the New York area is Oct 1. The average
probable date for bakery flour is Sept 15.

For barley only one company has been contacted so far: Benco, Peak and
Unger barley have a Chodosh packing date of Nov 1. Other companies are not
known yet. Estimated Chodosh date for other brands, pending further
information, is Oct 1.

The Guide to Chodosh is now scheduled for publication (bli neder) about the
third week of September. Updates until then will be publicized via E mail
and the Hot Line News voice recording at 845-356-5743.
